When it comes to powering the motors for you blinds and curtains, Glentec offer two common options - rechargeable li-ion battery and mains hardwired. Below we've put some information on the differences between these to help you choose what is best for you.

Battery:

  • Easy Installation: This is the biggest selling point. Battery-powered motors don't require any electrical wiring, making installation significantly simpler and often a DIY project. No need for an electrician, no chasing walls, and no visible cables.

  • Aesthetically Pleasing: The lack of wires means a cleaner, more minimalist look around your windows.

  • Portability/Flexibility: If you redecorate or rearrange your room, moving battery-powered blinds is much easier. They're also ideal for rental properties where you might not be allowed to alter electrical wiring.

  • Ideal for Retrofits: Perfect for adding automation to existing windows without major renovation work.

  • No Power Outage Worries: While the batteries themselves can run out, a power cut won't leave your blinds stuck in one position

  • Wireless App Control: Connect up via a Dream Hub or Tahoma with no wiring needed for control via an app or even with voice control through Alexa etc.

However, it's worth noting that the batteries will need charging roughly every 6-8 months with standard usage.

Mains:

  • Consistent Power, No Recharging: The main advantage – once installed, you never have to worry about batteries running out. They offer continuous, reliable operation.

  • Seamless Smart Home Integration: Often preferred for whole-home automation systems due to their constant power supply and robust connectivity options.

  • Four-Core Ability: A mains motor with live up and live down wires is used for a number of home automation systems, including but not limited to Rako and KNX.

  • Greater Lifting Capacity: Mains motors typically have more torque, making them ideal for larger, heavier blinds, curtains, or even sets of multiple blinds.

Choosing between battery and mains power largely depends on your specific circumstances. It's worth considering what is priority for you, be it connection and integration with home automation or just that you don't have wiring at the window and don't want to have to chase walls to hide the wiring. Both options provide the luxury of motorised window treatments, it just comes down to which type of convenience suits you best!
